First up: Gears of War for XBox 360
the game is a third person shooter and the storyline premise (as confusing as it is) is mankind fighting some kind of subterranean creatures on another planet that they've colonized... (again, I could be very wrong and I didn't research this at all, so feel free to correct me...)
Gameplay = suck
the game play is a little different from a lot of first person or third person shooters as you need to duck behind cover to keep from getting killed... from there you can peak around and shoot your enemies while staying protected... there is no jump ability and the reload function is different...
when you hit the reload button a bar with an indicator appears to show the time it takes to reload... if you hit the button again as the indicator climbs the bar at a certain spot, you will reload faster... but if you mis-time it, your gun will get jammed and it will take longer...
this can be very unfortunate in certain situations and extremely frustrating (especially with the sniper rifle)
so there's about a million things that annoy the piss out of me about this game...
I love all 3 Halo games and think that they are the best shooting games ever, but I try not to compare too many games to that because nothing can compare in my opinion....
Sniper Rifle = horse shit
the first thing I hate is the sniper rifle.. it has to be the worst sniper rifle I've played in a game... you only have one level of zoom, the movement is slow and when you fire it kind of seems to have a very slight delay...
you only get one shot before you have to reload and when you run out of bullets it automatically reloads for you... but when you're still in your zoom it won't do it... so when you're in a heavy battle sequence, you instinctively will hit the reload button but since it is already reloading you will hit the indicator in the wrong spot and jam up your gun...
horse shit...
Movement = slightly irritating
when you're moving about in the game, you can hold in the A button to run faster while ducking, and this is handy for escaping enemies or dodging fire... if you tap the A button while holding a direction, your character will dive that way...
the crappy thing about this movement system, is if you're backpeddling to get behind cover, your guy will drag ass and end up getting killed... if you dive backwards you still end up getting shot because you miss your cover you're trying to get to...
but all in all, that only happens a few times, and not really that big of a deal...
checkpoints/cut scenes = annoying as fuck
you'll hit checkpoints throughout the game, and then it seems like there are these long, drawn out scenes where your character is talking on his headset where the game will force you to only walk and not draw your weapon... this can be ANNOYING AS FUCK when right after that is a difficult section of the game, and you end up dying several times and have to sit through the scene and listen to the bullshit every time...
character/storyline = stereotypical dumbass/what the hell is going on?
the main character is named Marcus Fenix (like Phoenix only spelled stupid)... they tried to make this guy be too cool, by being this big burly ex con with a shady past, but still has a heart of gold... he also is always wearing this bandanna and I just want to snatch it from his head and punch him in the face...
the storyline has to be the most confusing thing I've ever seen... you don't know where you are or what you're doing half the time, and it puts you in situations that has you asking yourself, "Why am I here again?"
I didn't even realize I was at the end of the game once I beat it the first time... I didn't have a sense that this was the epic final battle... it was just like "oh, the game is over... it's about time..."
overall game = "it's no Halo"
so yes, all I could say while I was playing this game was that it has nothing on Halo and Master Chief could kick the shit out of this Marcus Fenix guy any day...
there were some fun parts to the game... using the hammer of dawn to blow the shit out of things with the satellite laser was different and the torque bow was fun once you figure out how to use it properly...
fighting the berzerker monster was scary and suspenseful... because the only way to kill it was to sneak past it, lure it outside and kill it with the hammer of dawn...
and the co-op can be fun if you and a friend are sitting around with nothing to do...
to sum up, a lot of people seem to like this game, but I thought it was totally overrated... it had some fun parts but as a whole I thought it was pretty shitty...
what do you think...?
